SUMMARY:Autumn Rambling in Wharfedale
DESCRIPTION:This is the second of two walking breaks in 2022. \nWharfedale has a variety of landscapes; wild moorland\, limestone uplands\, wooded valleys and gentle farmland\, with the uninterrupted beauty of Upper Wharfedale visible from the hilltops. At this time of year\, there’s the added pleasure of autumn colours. \nWe offer a choice each day of either short or longer walks with our guides\, returning to the welcome and warmth of the Hall.  Packed lunches are provided\, but if at any time you would rather take a stroll around the gardens\, lunch can be served for you in the dining room. \nOur chaplain\, Canon Graham Bettridge\, will be here for a part of your stay to provide spiritual leadership for those who would like to participate. \n Our other walking break this year is from 29 March – 1 April

SUMMARY:Literature Appreciation II: Shakespeare and the Supernatural
DESCRIPTION:Tutor:  Hugh Parry \nThe plays range from Athens to Windsor\, Ancient to Modern\, Protestant to Catholic to pagan\, urban to rural – all coloured by the different spiritual outlook of each and the kaleidoscopic nature of their cast\, sceptical or credulous\, pious or impious. We meet demons\, fairies\, ghosts and Olympian gods: omens loom;  we practise astrology  and visit oracles;  dreams\, visions and premonitions abound.  Shakespeare was not a theologian but a story-teller and an explorer of the human psyche.  In Hamlet’s old chestnut\, ‘There are more things in Heaven & Earth’ than are dreamt of in anyone’s philosophy\, and the spirit world impinges everywhere in the plays. \nHugh Parry has offered adult education classes in literature for over 30 years. Although loyal all his life to Shakespeare\, he has over the years given courses on a diverse range of topics\, including detective fiction\, utopias\, ghost stories\, Cowper\, Swift and R S Thomas. \nThe first Literature Appreciation event this year is from 12 – 14 April

SUMMARY:Consenting to the Presence & Action of God: How does that work in daily life
DESCRIPTION:Leader:  Jill Benet \n Rooted in the Desert Fathers and Mothers\, and the Cloud of Unknowing for its renewal\, Centering Prayer prepares us for the gift of contemplation. When we sit in Centering Prayer\, we are told\nthat by our willingness to renew our intention to consent to God’s presence and action within\, moment by moment\, our core of goodness is affirmed\, and our consciousness restructured. \nWhat does that mean in practice? Drawing on the extensive work of Thomas Keating and Cynthia Bourgeault\, we see how current psychological understanding resonates with the teaching of the mystics in practical ways. What might appear to be obstacles to our spiritual life turn out to be gateways to greater freedom. This weekend will allow us to explore the nuances\, and deepen our practice of Centering Prayer. There will be extended periods of prayer\, teaching and silence. \nJill is a teacher of Centering Prayer. She is the London Co-ordinator of Contemplative Outreach\, founded to teach the method of Centering Prayer and to support Centering Prayer groups and communities. She has studied in-depth the conceptual background and has attended several \nretreats led by its founder\, Father Thomas Keating\, as well as retreats led by Cynthia Bourgeault and Richard Rohr\, among others. She has trained in the US and UK and leads groups\, Introductory Days\, Quiet Days and retreats. Jill is a co-founder of the Silence in the City series of talks on the contemplative life.

SUMMARY:Julian of Norwich: 'within listening distance of the silence we call God'
DESCRIPTION:A Study Day with Joyce Simpson \n‘What seek ye?’\, or ‘What do you want?’ are the first words Jesus utters in St John’s Gospel.  Julian’s reply is direct and firm: ‘God of your goodness give me yourself’. \nHow does Julian\, an anchorite in 14th-century Norwich\, challenge and support pilgrims in the 21st century? Just as from the window of her cell Julian gave comfort and counsel to the burdened and perplexed\, so many have found that to spend time in the company of her book\, The Revelations of Divine Love\, is to find strength for the journey through life. \nJoyce Simpson\, retired Head of Humanities at Leeds Trinity University\, for many years taught medieval literature to undergraduates\, and has a particular interest in Julian of Norwich\, who lived through ‘an age of adversity’\, characterised by epidemic\, war\, civic conflict\, and harsh struggles for social justice. The day is a quest to discover for ourselves the truth of her insight the ‘Love was his meaning’. \nAlong the way we will ponder ‘Julian and Desire\, ‘Julian and Fear’\, ‘Julian and Trust’\, and consider the encounter between Julian and that flamboyant pilgrim\, Margery Kempe. \nArrival at 10am for Holy Communion at 10.15am. The price includes coffee\, lunch\, afternoon tea and evening meal.

SUMMARY:Art Appreciation II - Victorian narrative painting
DESCRIPTION:Every picture tells a story \nTutor:  Tim Stimson \nEntertaining\, thought-provoking and historically significant; the visual equivalent of chapters by Dickens\, Eliot\, Thackeray – these pictures provide a fascinating insight into the minds and hearts of our forefathers. We will also find that Sherlock Holmes’ deductive reasoning works with these pictures\, and we learn to `read` them on their own terms. \nTim’s involvement in art began with the practical. For a number of years\, he was a professional painter and ceramicist in Scotland and Wales\, before returning to university to study literature and the history of art. \nFor the last 30 years he has been a freelance cultural/art historian\, specialising in 17th- and 19th-century art and society. He now lectures for the University of Cambridge\, the WEA\, the Art Fund and \nThe Arts Society (previously NADFAS)\, and presents residential study courses in Britain and Europe. Tim has now completed two lecture tours of Australia\, the last in 2016\, and presented a lecture for \nHull City of Culture 2017 on T E Ferens\, patron of Hull’s newly refurbished gallery. \n  \nThe first Art Appreciation event this year is from 19 – 21 April

SUMMARY:For the Peace of the City: Christian-Muslim relations in Britain today
DESCRIPTION:Tutor:  Dr Phil Lewis \nThis retreat presupposes no knowledge of Islam. After a brief introduction\, there are four sessions: the first will look at ‘Worship in Islam’ where worship will be the lens through which we see how the Islamic tradition developed over time. It is appropriate to begin with a focus on worship since Islam literally means surrender/submission to God. \nThe second session will look at how first Jesus\, and then Muhammad\, is understood in the Qur’an and\, briefly\, in the Islamic tradition. This will draw attention to both similarities and radical differences in how shared religious categories are understood across both traditions\, for example\, prophecy\, martyrdom and God/Allah. \nOur third session will delve into how religious leaders – ‘ulama – who provide mosque personnel\, as well as legal specialists\, are trained in the more than 20 Islamic seminaries in Britain. This will make clear the crisis in religious formation and attempts to address this crisis. \nFinally\, we will look at the enormous social and religious\, challenges facing Muslims as a minority in British society\, and how Christians are responding to such challenges and creating a more hopeful\, shared future. \nThere will be plenty of opportunities during this retreat to chat informally about issues which interest or concern retreatants about Islam. \nAfter six years researching and lecturing at an ecumenical Christian Study Centre in Pakistan\, Dr Phil Lewis spent over twenty-five years advising Anglican Bishops of Bradford on Christian-Muslim relations\, as well as lecturing in the Peace Studies Department at Bradford University on Islam in the West & Religions\, Conflict and Peacemaking. His passion is how Christians and Muslims might live well together\, while acknowledging that both remain missionary religions with often difficult\, intertwined histories. He was part of the national Christian-Muslim forum set up in 2006 and sat on the European Council of Churches’ Islam in Europe committee. He has written three books on Islam in Britain\, the last with a Muslim friend\, entitled: Muslims in Britain: new directions in Islamic thought\, creativity and activism (Edinburgh University Press\, 2018). In retirement\, he continues to write\, review for the Church Times\, and teach ordinands about Islam in Britain and Christian-Muslim relations.

SUMMARY:Art Appreciation I
DESCRIPTION:Cartoonery:  English Attitudes \nTutor:  Tim Stimson \nMany artists discovered that humour is the key to winning the hearts of the English! Caricature\, satire and the cartoon have given pleasure\, satisfaction\, amusement and relief\, whilst drawing down censure and puncturing pomposity across class divides since the 18th century. \nFrom the witty and genteel to the vicious and scurrilous\, these pithy encapsulations of the recognisable\, continue to have relevance today. They are miniature masterpieces\, ephemeral yet enduring through time.  From the Georgians; Gillray & Rowlandson\, to Punch and Strand cartoonists\, Tenniel\, Sambourne\, Leach and Dickie Doyle and from Thelwell to Scarfe\, these virtual drolleries have lost none of their appeal. He now lectures for the University of Cambridge\, the WEA\, the Art Fund and the Arts Society (formerly NADFAS)\, and presents residential study courses in Britain and Europe. Tim has now completed two lecture tours of Australia\, the last in 2016\, and presented a lecture of Hull City of Culture 2017 on T E Ferens\, patron of Hull’s newly refurbished gallery. \nThe second Art Appreciation event this year is from 9 – 11 August \n

SUMMARY:Literature Appreciation I
DESCRIPTION:Chaucer \nTutor:  Hugh Parry \nChaucer now seems to be treated as the purveyor of rollicking pseudo-Medieval romps\, flattened of course in to modern English:  not a fate which genius deserves.  This course will sidestep the favourites beloved of travelling players and setters of school syllabuses\, and give a glimpse of his quality through some of his less familiar Canterbury Tales\, as well as taking you on a journey to some strange places of the imagination where you will meet duchesses\, goddesses\, bird\, good women – and not so good women. \nThe second Literature Appreciation event this year is from 27 – 30 September
