SUMMARY:Beginner's Birdwatching & the Dawn Chorus
DESCRIPTION:Leader: Chris Bradshaw \n Join us on a relaxed birdwatching break aimed at people new to birdwatching\, or those just wishing to enjoy commoner birds in a tranquil location.  We will have a programme of short birdwatching walks which focus on learning how to identify and understand more about the life histories of the commoner resident and migrant birds that occur in the area.  There will also be the opportunity to experience one of nature’s most delightful spring events; the dawn chorus. \nChris Bradshaw has been working as a freelance ornithologist and birdwatching tour guide for over 20 years.  Although frequently to be found overseas\, he runs customised birdwatching trips in the UK\,  and finds great joy in watching and passing on his knowledge of the commoner British birds which first inspired his interest as a child.

DESCRIPTION:Cartoonery:  English Attitudes \nTutor:  Tim Stimson \nMany artists discovered that humour is the key to winning the hearts of the English! Caricature\, satire and the cartoon have given pleasure\, satisfaction\, amusement and relief\, whilst drawing down censure and puncturing pomposity across class divides since the 18th century. \nFrom the witty and genteel to the vicious and scurrilous\, these pithy encapsulations of the recognisable\, continue to have relevance today. They are miniature masterpieces\, ephemeral yet enduring through time.  From the Georgians; Gillray & Rowlandson\, to Punch and Strand cartoonists\, Tenniel\, Sambourne\, Leach and Dickie Doyle and from Thelwell to Scarfe\, these virtual drolleries have lost none of their appeal. \nTim’s involvement in art began with the practical.  For a number of years\, he was a professional painter and ceramicist in Scotland and Wales\, before returning to university to study literature and the history of art. \nFor the last 30 years he has been a freelance cultural/art historian\, specialising in 17th- and 19th-century art and society.  He now lectures for the University of Cambridge\, the WEA\, the Art Fund and the Arts Society (formerly NADFAS)\, and presents residential study courses in Britain and Europe. Tim has now completed two lecture tours of Australia\, the last in 2016\, and presented a lecture of Hull City of Culture 2017 on T E Ferens\, patron of Hull’s newly refurbished gallery. \nThe second Art Appreciation event this year is from 9 – 11 August \n

DESCRIPTION:Chaucer \nTutor:  Hugh Parry \nChaucer now seems to be treated as the purveyor of rollicking pseudo-Medieval romps\, flattened of course in to modern English:  not a fate which genius deserves.  This course will sidestep the favourites beloved of travelling players and setters of school syllabuses\, and give a glimpse of his quality through some of his less familiar Canterbury Tales\, as well as taking you on a journey to some strange places of the imagination where you will meet duchesses\, goddesses\, bird\, good women – and not so good women. \nHugh Parry has offered adult education classes in literature for over 30 years. He travelled much of the country\, and was a regular guest of Sir William Milner at Parcevall Hall.  He documented these times with writings and paintings\, observed through the lens of a different culture and in a distinctly Chinese style.  His book The Silent Traveller in the Yorkshire Dales is one of a series he wrote whilst living in England in the 1930s and 40s. Join Will Poulter as he talks about Chiang Lee’s life\, writings and paintings\, and his intriguing depictions of the Yorkshire landscape. \nSince 2001\, William has worked in a variety of capacities for Leeds Library and also as a Communities Librarian. His career has included several roles in specialist departments.   He is currently a Librarian for the Business & IP Centre. \nPrior to 2001\, he studied art\, design\, illustration and photography at Leeds College of Art\, and later completed a degree in Philosophy and Creative Writing.  Alongside his love of art\, philosophy and literature\, he has a particular passion for Oriental art and thinking\, with a special interest in Zen and Ch’an ideas. William trained as a bookbinder and now volunteers in this capacity at the private Leeds Library. \nThis option includes afternoon tea.

SUMMARY:A Day of Silence\, Prayer and Reflection - Being with Jesus
DESCRIPTION:Leader: The Right Reverend Lord Hope \n  \nYou are welcome to begin this day of silence\, reflection and prayer by joining our weekly Holy Communion at 10.15am\, otherwise the day will begin at 11.30am\, and includes lunch\, morning coffee and afternoon tea. \nDavid Hope was born in Wakefield where he attended the Grammar School and sang in the Cathedral Choir. He went on to Nottingham University where he gained a degree in Theology\, and then to St Stephen’s House\, Oxford\, to prepare for ordination. Whilst there he gained a doctorate in early liturgical texts. He was ordained in 1965 in Liverpool where he served a curacy for four years\, part of this time spent as a priest student in Bucharest\, licensed to serve in Yugoslavia\, Romania and Bulgaria! – all still under strict communist regimes. His first incumbency was in Warrington\, a council estate of some 15.000. He returned to St Stephen’s House as Principal in 1974 and in 1982 became Vicar of All Saints Church in the west end of London. In 1985 he returned to Wakefield as Diocesan Bishop\, and in 1991 became Bishop of London. In 1995 he became Archbishop of York. Following retirement in 2005 he returned to parish life as vicar of St Margaret’s Ilkley\, but retired due to ill health eighteen months later. He now describes himself as priest of last resort! \nThe price for this event includes lunch \n

DESCRIPTION:Tutor: Hilary Oliver \n Ensemble playing in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere\, this workshop is aimed at experienced adult players who ideally offer two instruments and are able to swap between them.  The ability to hold your own part in a group and good sight-reading skills are key.  Expect a wide variety of interesting music and technique tuition\, as required. \nHilary is a retired music teacher who has played recorder for over 50 years. She started conducting and teaching whilst in the school 6th form\, then continued her musical studies at the Birmingham School of Music.  She has worked as a peripatetic woodwind tutor for more than 25 years.  Playing in a local consort as well as an early music wind ensemble\, she also conducts SRP meetings to indulge her passion for both ancient and modern recorder music.

DESCRIPTION:Leader: Revd Ruth Harris \nJourneying with Christ is the theme for the Lent Retreat this year.  \nWe have all had a difficult few years coping with Covid and all the measures implemented such as lockdowns and restrictions on meeting with each other. In this time of trial many found new links with the natural world and realised that to slow down and see wildlife\, gardens and the rhythm of nature is beneficial to our souls. On this retreat for Lent we will be looking again at God’s world and how it inspires us. Lent is often seen as a time of giving up something\, but this retreat will help us find more in God’s creation to encourage us on our journey towards Easter. We will discover more about how Creation can help us draw closer to the Creator. \nRuth is retired and previously served a vicar in Skipton with Carleton\, and was Area Dean for the Skipton Deanery. Originally from the Wakefield area\, she has served as a part time FE College Chaplain as well as a parish priest. Ruth is a Spiritual Director for the Diocese and serves as part of the Diocesan Tanzania Link Committee. Before ordination\, Ruth worked as an archivist for the West Yorkshire Archive Service.

DESCRIPTION:Leader: Revd Canon Andrew Tawn \n An opportunity to take time away from the parish to read\, reflect\, walk\, chat\, rest and sleep.  You are invited to bring along books of your own choice of a theological or spiritual nature. All who are present share with the group which books they have chosen and why.  This often leads to conversations with each other during the retreat about books of mutual interest. \nAfter that introduction\, apart from meal and prayer times\, the remainder of this retreat is relaxed and unstructured – a time of refreshment for body\, mind and soul in a place of beauty and peace.  The cost can be paid from your CMD retreat grant.  If you have not been involved in this event before and would like to know more\, please contact Revd Canon Andrew Tawn. SUMMARY:Heart & Soul Singing Retreat I
DESCRIPTION:Tutor:  Keely Hodgson \nCombine singing in harmony with rest\, nurture and inspiration.  No previous singing experience\, or the ability to read music\, is required.  A varied repertoire of songs and rounds are sensitively taught using call and response. \nKeely Hodgson is a composer and natural voice practitioner.  She has worked as a music specialist in primary and special school settings and leads a number of community singing groups\, including Ben Rhydding Community Choir.  She organises monthly events of music and the spoken word.  Keely is committed to sharing the sense of well-being and soulful connection that singing with others can bring and helping those who have not sung before to discover their unique voice. \nThere is a second Heart & Soul Singing retreat from 13 – 15 July\, and a third from 14 – 16 October.

Following a curacy in Dorset and three years as a school chaplain\, he was appointed as the Rector of Christ Church Cathedral in Stanley in the Falkland Islands which included South Georgia\, South Sandwich Islands and British Antarctica. \nDuring his tenure\, he conducted a service at the whalers’ station in South Georgia where he preached on the ‘silent land’. This retreat explores\, in the light of the various lockdowns during COVID-19\, what it might mean to enter the silent land and how God may be encountered. \nThis is a free event\, but please note\, booking is now required. DESCRIPTION:Tutor: Hilary Oliver \nEnsemble playing in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere\, this workshop is aimed at experienced adult players who ideally offer two instruments and are able to swap between them. The ability to hold your own part in a group and good sight-reading skills are key. Expect a wide variety of interesting music and technique tuition\, as required. She started conducting and teaching whilst in the school 6th form\, then continued her musical studies at the Birmingham School of Music. She has worked as a peripatetic woodwind tutor for more than 25 years. Playing in a local consort as well as an early music wind ensemble\, she also conducts SRP meetings to indulge her passion for both ancient and modern recorder music.

DESCRIPTION:Leader:  Joyce Simpson \n‘Let us now go even unto Bethlehem.’\n\nThe journey to Bethlehem passes through the wilderness\, where John\, the desert wild man\, insists that change is necessary\, and change is coming. As pilgrims\, in the company of poets\, we shall venture into the wilderness\, seeking to confront afresh the silence and resonance of God. With perhaps both hope and fear in our hearts\, we shall move expectantly towards the question: ‘What might happen if we were to  invite God into our lives that bit more radically?’ \nJoyce Simpson is the retired Head of Humanities at Leeds Trinity University\, where she established an MA programme in Literature and Spirituality. Nowadays she delights in discovering the thoughts and insights of fellow-voyagers from different walks of life.

DESCRIPTION:Witness: Revd Martin Thorpe\n\nA silent ‘listening’ weekend. ‘Jesus invites you into His Presence.’ Contemplative life is the expression of the desire to seek stillness amid the rush of life\, to hear ‘the still small voice’ amid today’s modern clamour; to search for and listen to God. \nExperienced with others in a group\, silence is deeper and more powerful than when alone. By making a dedicated personal space for yourself and your relationship with God\, you are giving yourself and Him a wonderful gift. \nA Dominical saying is taken for each exercise and contemplated. We listen to God. In intercession towards the end of each exercise we bring others\, family\, friends and world events into the silence so that they too are enfolded in God’s purposes and healing. \nMartin is Team Vicar at St James’ Westbrook Church in Warrington. The colours of autumn are spectacular. \nWe offer a choice each day of either short or longer walks with our guides\, returning to the welcome and warmth of the Hall.  Packed lunches are provided\, but if at any time you would rather take a stroll around the gardens\, lunch can be served for you in the dining room. \nOur Chaplain\, Canon Graham Bettridge will be resident at the Hall to provide spiritual leadership for those who wish to participate.

DESCRIPTION:Tutor: Hugh Parry \n \nThe borderline between Earth and Hell has always been permeable enough to enable writers to invite some unsavoury characters to pay us a visit and curdle our blood.  The fear is salutary\, no doubt – and the commercial potential gratifying.  This course will look at creepy and demonic spiritual intruders – mostly in early drama\, but with one or two surprises\, just in case you thought you were safe. \nHugh Parry has offered adult education classes in literature for over 30 years. Although loyal all his life to Shakespeare\, he has over the years given courses on a diverse range of topics\, including detective fiction\, utopias\, ghost stories\, Cowper\, Swift and R S Thomas. \n

SUMMARY:Heart & Soul Singing Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Tutor:  Keely Hodgson \n \nCombine singing in harmony with rest nurture and inspiration.  No previous singing experience\, or the ability to read music\, is required. A varied repertoire of songs and rounds are sensitively taught using call and response. \nKeely Hodgson is a composer and natural voice practitioner. She has worked as a music specialist in primary and special school settings and leads a number of community singing groups\, including Ben Rhydding Community Choir.  She organises local monthly events of music and the spoken word. \nKeely is committed to sharing the sense of well-being and soulful connection that singing with other can bring\, and helping those who have not sung before to discover their unique voice. \n
