SUMMARY:Literature Appreciation: Tales from the Underworld
DESCRIPTION:Tutor: Hugh Parry \n \nThe borderline between Earth and Hell has always been permeable enough to enable writers to invite some unsavoury characters to pay us a visit and curdle our blood.  The fear is salutary\, no doubt – and the commercial potential gratifying.  This course will look at creepy and demonic spiritual intruders – mostly in early drama\, but with one or two surprises\, just in case you thought you were safe. \nHugh Parry has offered adult education classes in literature for over 30 years. Although loyal all his life to Shakespeare\, he has over the years given courses on a diverse range of topics\, including detective fiction\, utopias\, ghost stories\, Cowper\, Swift and R S Thomas. \n

SUMMARY:Art Appreciation II - Laura Knight and English Impressionism
DESCRIPTION:Tutor: Tim Stimson \nLaura Knight’s career began in earnest at Staithes on the North Yorkshire coast\, with her husband-to-be\, Harold\, and other artists inspired by outdoor painting. In paint and prose she expressed her admiration and solidarity with the hardy fisher folk of Staithes whilst developing her own painting techniques. The Staithes painters were part of the ‘plein air’ movement which erupted in the 1870s. \nAt Newlyn on the Cornish coast\, Laura Knight discovered herself and her art. At the artists’ community revolving around Stanhope Forbes and other talented artists\, her brightly-coloured poster-like clarity and optimism ensured her increasing popularity.   Her move to London with Harold opened the subject matter or which she has become famous – gypsies\, the ballet and circuses.  Between the wars Dame Laura Knight was undoubtedly the most popular British painter\, interest in whom has re-emerged recently. \nTim’s involvement with art began with the practical. For a number of years he was a professional painter and ceramicist in Scotland and Wales\, before returning to university to study literature and the history of art. \nFor the last 30 years he has been a freelance cultural/art historian\, specialising in 17th- and 19th- century art and society.  he now lectures for the University of Cambridge\, the WEA\, the Art Fund and the Arts Society (previously NADFAS)\, and presents residential study courses in Britain and Europe. Tim has now completed two lecture tours of Australia\, the last in 2016\, and presented a lecture for Hull City of Culture 2017 on T E Ferens\, patron of Hull’s newly refurbished gallery. \n

SUMMARY:For the Peace of the City: Christian-Muslim relations in Britain today
DESCRIPTION:This event has unfortunately been cancelled\, but will be included on the programme for next year. \nTutor:  Dr Phil Lewis \nThis retreat presupposes no knowledge of Islam. After a brief introduction\, there are four sessions: the first will look at ‘Worship in Islam’ where worship will be the lens through which we see how the Islamic tradition developed over time. It is appropriate to begin with a focus on worship since Islam literally means ‘surrender’/’submission’ to God. \nThe second session will look sequentially at how first Jesus\, and then Muhammad\, is understood in the Qur’an and\, briefly\, in the Islamic tradition. This will draw attention to both similarities and radical differences in how shared religious categories are understood across both traditions\, for example\, prophecy\, martyrdom and ‘God’/’Allah’. \nOur third session will delve into how religious leaders – ‘ulama – who provide mosque personnel\, as well as legal specialists\, are trained in the more than 20 Islamic seminaries in Britain. This will make clear the crisis in religious formation and attempts to address this crisis. \nFinally\, we will look at the enormous social and religious challenges facing Muslims as a minority in British society\, and how Christians are responding to such challenges and creating a more hopeful\, shared future. \nThere will be plenty of opportunities during this retreat to chat informally about issues which interest or concern retreatants about Islam. \nAfter six years researching and lecturing at an ecumenical Christian Study Centre in Pakistan\, Dr Phil Lewis spent over twenty five years advising Anglican bishops of Bradford on Christian-Muslim relations\, and lecturing in the Peace Studies Department at Bradford University on Islam in the West & Religions\, Conflict and Peacemaking. His passion is how Christians and Muslims might live well together\, while acknowledging that both remain missionary religions with often difficult\, intertwined histories. He was part of the national Christian-Muslim forum set up in 2006 and sat on the European Council of Churches’ Islam in Europe committee. He has written three books on Islam in Britain\, the last with a Muslim friend\, entitled: Muslims in Britain: new directions in Islamic thought\, creativity and activism (Edinburgh University Press\, 2018). In retirement\, he continues to write\, review for the Church Times\, and teach ordinands about Islam in Britain and Christian-Muslim relations. \n

SUMMARY:Julian of Norwich: 'within listening distance of the silence we call God'
DESCRIPTION:This event is cancelled \nA study day with Joyce Simpson \n‘What seek ye?’\, or ‘What do you want?’ are the first words Jesus utters in St John’s Gospel.  Julian’s reply is direct and firm: ‘God of your goodness give me yourself’.  How does Julian\, an anchorite in 14th century Norwich\, challenge and support pilgrims in the 21st century?  Just as from the window of her cell Julian gave comfort and counsel to the burdened and perplexed\, so many have found that to spend time in the company of her book\, The Revelations of Divine Love\, is to find strength for the journey through life. \nJoyce Simpson\, retired Head of Humanities at Leeds Trinity University\, for many years taught medieval literature to undergraduates\, and has a particular interest in Julian of Norwich\, who lived through ‘an age of adversity’\, characterised by epidemic\, war\, civic conflict\, and harsh struggles for social justice. The day is a quest to discover for ourselves the truth of her insight that ‘Love was his meaning’. Along the way we will ponder ‘Julian and Desire’\, ‘Julian and Fear’\,  ‘Julian and Trust’\, and consider the encounter between Julian and that flamboyant pilgrim\, Margery Kempe. \nArrival at 10am for Holy Communion at 10.15am. The price includes coffee\, lunch\, afternoon tea and evening meal. \n*There is the option to stay overnight on Monday 10th May.

SUMMARY:Art Appreciation I - Cartoonery: English Attitudes
DESCRIPTION:This event is cancelled \nTutor:  Tim Stimson \nMany artists have discovered that humour is the key to winning the hearts of the English!  Caricature\, satire and the cartoon have given pleasure\, satisfaction\, amusement and relief\, whilst drawing down censure and puncturing pomposity across class divides since the 18th century. \nFrom the witty and genteel to the vicious and scurrilous\, these pithy encapsulations of the recognisable\, continue to have relevance today. They are miniature masterpieces\, ephemeral yet enduring through time.  From the Georgians; Gillray & Rowlandson\, to Punch and Strand cartoonists\, Tenniel\, Sambourne\, Leach and Dickie Doyle and from Thelwell to Scarfe\, these virtual drolleries have lost none of their appeal. \nTim’s involvement in art began with the practical.  For a number of years\, he was a professional painter and ceramicist in Scotland and Wales\, before returning to university to study literature and the history of art. \nFor the last 30 years he has been a freelance cultural/art historian\, specialising in 17th- and 19th-century art and society.  He now lectures for the University of Cambridge\, the WEA\, the Art Fund and the Arts Society (formerly NADFAS)\, and presents residential study courses in Britain and Europe. SUMMARY:Literature Appreciation II
DESCRIPTION:Tales from the Underworld \nTutor:  Hugh Parry\n\nThe borderline between Earth and Hell has always been permeable enough to enable writers to invite some unsavoury characters to pay us a visit and curdle our blood. The fear is salutary\, no doubt – and the commercial potential gratifying.  This course will look at creepy and  demonic spiritual intruders – mostly in early drama\, but with one or two modern surprises\, just in case you thought you were safe.
