SUMMARY:Clergy Reading Week
DESCRIPTION:Leader: Revd Canon Stephen Treasure \nAn opportunity to take time away from the parish to read\, reflect\, walk\, chat\, rest and sleep. You are invited to bring along books of your own choice of a theological or spiritual nature.  All who are present share with the group which books they have chosen and why.  This often leads to conversations with each other during the retreat about books of mutual interest. \nAfter that introduction\, apart from meal and prayer times\, the remainder of this retreat is relaxed and unstructured – a time of refreshment for body\, mind and soul in a place of beauty and peace. The cost can be paid from your CMD retreat grant.  If you have not been to this event before\, and would like to know more\, please contact the Revd Canon Stephen Treasure who is the event coordinator. For bookings\, please contact Parcevall Hall.

SUMMARY:Advent Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Leader: Canon Adrian Botwright \nAdvent is all about the ‘not just yet’. Unlike Christmas\, Easter\, Pentecost or Ascension\, we’re not busy celebrating something which has already happened\, rather we’re there before it all happens; we’re waiting\, calm\, open\, poised – and this gives Advent a very different and rather special feel. This retreat will try to help us enjoy to the full these days of ‘not yet’; to set aside the trivial things which too often dominate our lives; to develop an attitude of waiting on God\, and to dare to be surprised\, challenged and thrilled by what may happen at the end of Advent. \nCanon Adrian Botwright was Rector of Holy Trinity in Skipton for almost 20 years. He now lives in Thirsk and focuses on leading retreats\, quiet days\, offering spiritual direction and serving as Chaplain in various places\, including four weeks each year on Bardsey Island. He enjoys hugely music\, poetry\, walking\, trains\, a campervan\, and scuba diving.

SUMMARY:Fellowship of Contemplative Prayer Retreat II
DESCRIPTION:‘Be still and know that I am God’ Ps 46 v 10 \nThis retreat follows the format of the earlier one in April\, but with a different Witness. After meeting and welcoming both old and new friends and having our first excellent Parcevall Hall meal together\, we will later in the evening have Compline after which the silence will begin. It is possible to go into silence personally before then if you wish. The Witness will tell us the plan for and theme of the retreat. \nSilence continues until just before lunch on the final day. The extended periods of silence between the hour-long contemplative exercises gives each person time and space to be in God’s presence\, to be guided or simply to rest in Him from the busyness of life\, and be refreshed. There will be opportunity for personal private short interviews with the Witness. All are welcome. \nFor more information on the Fellowship of Contemplative Prayer visit www.contemplative-prayer.org.uk. For questions\, enquiries and to book\, please contact Sue Davies on 01924 255129 or email susandavies367@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Literature Appreciation - Shakespeare’s Extras
DESCRIPTION:Tutor: Hugh Parry \nThis course is a celebration of the extraordinary generosity with which Shakespeare treated the minor actors in his company who did the bitpart chores. Even in a few lines he could create cameos which would be a privilege to play\, either illuminated by flashes of wonderful poetry or given narrative significance far beyond their apparently meagre word-count. Hugh Parry has offered adult education classes in literature for over 30 years. \nAlthough loyal all his life to Shakespeare\, he has over the years given courses on a diverse range of topics\, including detective fiction\, utopias\, ghost stories\, Cowper\, Swift and R S Thomas.

SUMMARY:Art Appreciation II - Klimt & the Golden Age of Vienna
DESCRIPTION:Tutor: Tim Stimson \nKlimt\, as the leader of the Vienna Secession\, began his career adorning the new buildings of the Ringstrasse\, yet at the height of his fame his works became increasingly controversial\, especially his images of the Femme Fatale; yet he also painted sensitive\nlandscapes and portraits\, and complex allegories. Above all his works are gloriously decorative and exuberant. \nThis course locates Klimt within the social milieu of Vienna and investigates his idiosyncratic art and life. Tim’s involvement in art began with the practical. For a number of years he was a professional painter/ceramicist in Scotland and Wales\, before returning to university to study literature and the history of art\, then training to teach adults. \nFor the last 30 years he has been a freelance cultural/art historian\, specialising in 17th and 19th century art and society. He now lectures for the University of Cambridge\, the WEA\, the Art Fund and The Arts Society (previously NADFAS)\, and presents residential study courses in Britain and Europe. Tim has now completed two lecture tours of Australia\, the last in 2016\, and presented a lecture for Hull City of Culture 2017 on T E Ferens\, patron of Hull’s newly refurbished gallery.

SUMMARY:The Spiritual Aspect of Counselling
DESCRIPTION:Counselling can be at its most effective when we look in-depth at the human psyche. The testing steps we go through in life unavoidably create suffering\, which can make or break us.  To heal and develop understanding from sorrows and distortions there is a need to reflect on how we manage the ‘self’. This course will discuss how the ‘three souls in every man’ interact within us\, and how listening to this hidden intelligence slowly shapes our being into a healthier place\, to give greater wisdom and integrity. \nMarion Duff MBACP has been an in-depth freelance counsellor\, supervisor and trainer in South Manchester for three and a half decades. Pastoral carers\, bereavements groups\, lectures for counsellors\, ministers\, teachers\, EQ courses\, and workshops on a variety of subjects have all been included over the years. \nClick here to read or download the schedule for these two days. \nYou can download and print off our flyer for this event by clicking here.

SUMMARY:Beginner’s Birdwatching & the Dawn Chorus
DESCRIPTION:Leader:  Chris Bradshaw \nJoin us on a relaxed birdwatching break aimed at people new to birdwatching\, or those just wishing to enjoy commoner birds in a tranquil location. We will have a programme of short birdwatching walks which focus on learning how to identify and  understand more about the life histories of the commoner resident and migrant birds that occur in the area. \nThere will also be plenty of opportunity to experience one of nature’s most delightful spring events; the dawn chorus. \nThe focus will be on learning about commoner birds\, so we will not be ‘chasing’ a big bird list.  Birds we hope to encounter during the course of the event include common species such as the Mistle and Song Thrush\, Blackbird\, Robin\, Wren\, Dunnock\, Blue\, Great and Coal Tit\, Treecreeper\, Nuthatch\, Great Spotted Woodpecker and Chaffinch. Summer migrants will hopefully include Swallow\, House Martin\, Chiffchaff\, Willow Warbler\, Blackcap and perhaps Redstart\, Pied and Spotted Flycatchers and maybe Wood Warbler. Birds of prey may include Kestrel\, Buzzard\, Red Kite and Peregrine. Along the streams and rivers Dipper and Grey Wagtail are likely\, whilst surrounding hillsides will be home to Meadow Pipits and Sky Larks. \n Hearing the dawn chorus at Parcevall is a memorable experience! \nChris Bradshaw has been working as a freelance ornithologist and birdwatching tour guide for over 20 years. Although  frequently to be found overseas\, he runs customised birdwatching trips in the UK and finds great joy in watching and passing on his knowledge of the commoner British birds which first inspired his interest as a child. \nYou can download and print off our flyer with more details of this event by clicking here.
