SUMMARY:Julian of Norwich - a Study Day with Joyce Simpson*
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED \n‘within listening distance of the silence we call God’ \nTutor: Joyce Simpson \n‘What seek ye?’ or ‘What do you want?’ are the first words Jesus utters in St John’s Gospel.  Julian’s reply is direct and firm: ‘God of your goodness give me yourself’.  How does Julian\, an anchorite in 14th century Norwich\, challenge and support pilgrims in the 21st century?  Just as from the window of her cell Julian gave comfort and counsel to the burdened and perplexed\, so many have found that to spend time in the company of her book\, The Revelations of Divine Love\, is to find strength for the journey through life. \nJoyce Simpson\, retired Head of Humanities at Leeds Trinity University\, for many years taught medieval literature to undergraduates\, and has a particular interest in Julian of Norwich\, whose world like ours today was marked by civic conflict\, insecurity and rapid change.  We will examine both Julian’s writings and her contemporary context in a quest to discover for ourselves the truth of her insight that ‘Love was his meaning’. \nArrival at 10 am for Holy Communion at 10.15 am.  The price includes coffee\, lunch\, afternoon tea and evening meal. \n*There is the option to stay overnight on 11 May\, subject to availability.

SUMMARY:Art Appreciation I
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED \nCartoonery:  English Attitudes \nTutor:  Tim Stimson \nMany artists have discovered that humour is the key to winning the hearts of the English!  Caricature\, satire and the cartoon have given pleasure\, satisfaction\, amusement and relief\, whilst drawing down censure and puncturing pomposity across class divides since the 18th century. \nFrom the witty and genteel to the vicious and scurrilous\, these pithy encapsulations of the recognisable continue to have relevance today.  They are miniature masterpieces\, ephemeral yet enduring through time. \nFrom the Georgians; Gillray & Rowlandson\, to Punch and Strand cartoonists\, Tenniel\, Sambourne\, Leach and Dickie Doyle and from Thelwell to Scarfe\, these virtual drolleries have lost none of their appeal. \nTim’s involvement in art began with the practical.  For a number of years he was a professional painter and ceramicist in Scotland and Wales\, before returning to university to study literature and the history of art. \nFor the last 30 years he has been a freelance cultural/art historian\, specialising in 17th and 18th century art and society.  He now lectures for the University of Cambridge\, the WEA\, the Arts Fund and the The Arts Society (formerly NADFAS)\, and presents residential study courses in Britain and Europe.  Tim as now completed two lecture tours of Australia\, the last in 2016\, and presented a lecture for the Hull City of Culture 2017 on T E Ferens\, patron of Hull’s newly refurbished gallery. \nThe second Art Appreciation event in our 2020 programme is from 25-27 August.

SUMMARY:Literature Appreciation I
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED \nCHAUCER \nTutor:  Hugh Parry \nChaucer now seems to be treated as the purveyor of rollicking pseudo-Medieval romps\, flattened of course into modern English;  not a fate which genius deserves.  This course will sidestep the favourites beloved of travelling players and setters of school syllabuses\, and give a glimpse of his quality through some of his less familiar Canterbury Tales\, as well as taking you on a journey to some strange places of the imagination where you will meet duchesses\, goddesses\, birds\, good women – and not so good women. \nHugh Parry has offered adult education classes in literature for over 30 years.  Although loyal all his life to Shakespeare\, he has over the years given courses on a diverse range of topics\, including detective fiction\, utopias\, ghost stories\, Cowper\, Swift and R S Thomas. \nThe second Literature Appreciation retreat in our 2020 programme is from 13 – 15 November.

SUMMARY:Advent Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Leader: Canon Adrian Botwright \nAdvent is all about the ‘not just yet’. Unlike Christmas\, Easter\, Pentecost or Ascension\, we’re not busy celebrating something which has already happened\, rather we’re there before it all happens; we’re waiting\, calm\, open\, poised – and this gives Advent a very different and rather special feel. This retreat will try to help us enjoy to the full these days of ‘not yet’; to set aside the trivial things which too often dominate our lives; to develop an attitude of waiting on God\, and to dare to be surprised\, challenged and thrilled by what may happen at the end of Advent. \nCanon Adrian Botwright was Rector of Holy Trinity in Skipton for almost 20 years. He now lives in Thirsk and focuses on leading retreats\, quiet days\, offering spiritual direction and serving as Chaplain in various places\, including four weeks each year on Bardsey Island. He enjoys hugely music\, poetry\, walking\, trains\, a campervan\, and scuba diving.

SUMMARY:Fellowship of Contemplative Prayer Retreat II
DESCRIPTION:‘Be still and know that I am God’ Ps 46 v 10 \nThis retreat follows the format of the earlier one in April\, but with a different Witness. After meeting and welcoming both old and new friends and having our first excellent Parcevall Hall meal together\, we will later in the evening have Compline after which the silence will begin. It is possible to go into silence personally before then if you wish. The Witness will tell us the plan for and theme of the retreat. \nSilence continues until just before lunch on the final day. The extended periods of silence between the hour-long contemplative exercises gives each person time and space to be in God’s presence\, to be guided or simply to rest in Him from the busyness of life\, and be refreshed. There will be opportunity for personal private short interviews with the Witness. All are welcome. \nFor more information on the Fellowship of Contemplative Prayer visit www.contemplative-prayer.org.uk. For questions\, enquiries and to book\, please contact Sue Davies on 01924 255129 or email susandavies367@gmail.com
