SUMMARY:Beginner’s Birdwatching & the Dawn Chorus
DESCRIPTION:Leader:  Chris Bradshaw \nJoin us on a relaxed birdwatching break aimed at people new to birdwatching\, or those just wishing to enjoy commoner birds in a tranquil location. We will have a programme of short birdwatching walks which focus on learning how to identify and  understand more about the life histories of the commoner resident and migrant birds that occur in the area. \nThere will also be plenty of opportunity to experience one of nature’s most delightful spring events; the dawn chorus. \nThe focus will be on learning about commoner birds\, so we will not be ‘chasing’ a big bird list.  Birds we hope to encounter during the course of the event include common species such as the Mistle and Song Thrush\, Blackbird\, Robin\, Wren\, Dunnock\, Blue\, Great and Coal Tit\, Treecreeper\, Nuthatch\, Great Spotted Woodpecker and Chaffinch. Summer migrants will hopefully include Swallow\, House Martin\, Chiffchaff\, Willow Warbler\, Blackcap and perhaps Redstart\, Pied and Spotted Flycatchers and maybe Wood Warbler. Birds of prey may include Kestrel\, Buzzard\, Red Kite and Peregrine. Along the streams and rivers Dipper and Grey Wagtail are likely\, whilst surrounding hillsides will be home to Meadow Pipits and Sky Larks. \n Hearing the dawn chorus at Parcevall is a memorable experience! \nChris Bradshaw has been working as a freelance ornithologist and birdwatching tour guide for over 20 years. Although  frequently to be found overseas\, he runs customised birdwatching trips in the UK and finds great joy in watching and passing on his knowledge of the commoner British birds which first inspired his interest as a child. \nYou can download and print off our flyer with more details of this event by clicking here.

SUMMARY:Fellowship of Contemplative Prayer Retreat I
DESCRIPTION:‘Come to me\, all you who are weary and heavy laden\, and I will give you rest’\nMt 11 v 28 \nContemplative Prayer is the expression of the desire to seek stillness amid the rush of life\, to find silence amid noise\, to listen amid the clamour to speak\, to deepen the internal amid the purely external – to search for God amid busyness. \nSilence experienced as a group can be deeper than that experienced alone and can greatly help and encourage a person in their own regular prayer time. During the retreat the witness will lead us collectively in 3 to 4 guided silent exercises following the FCP format. Each exercise lasts for one hour. \nSilence will start late on the first evening and continue until just before lunch on the final day. The extended silences between the witness-led sessions give personal uninterrupted space to  contemplate the direction into which God is guiding each of us\, or simply to rest\, relax and be. During these times retreatants are free to be in the house or gardens\, or anywhere they wish. Witnesses are usually long-term members of the Contemplative Fellowship. They are often ordained but may be lay people experienced in Contemplative Prayer and church life. There is also the opportunity for short private interviews with the witness. All are welcome. \nFor more information\, enquiries and also to book this retreat\, contact Sue Davies.\nTelephone 01924 255129 or email susandavies367@gmail.com.\nFor more information about the Fellowship of Contemplative Prayer visit www.contemplative-prayer.org.uk.

SUMMARY:Art Appreciation I - Landscapes of Wonder
DESCRIPTION:Tutor:  Tim Stimson \nIn the early 19th century in Britain spectacular paintings of epic events in awe-inspiring landscapes competed for popularity with enchantingly diminutive vistas of fairyland; both encapsulating a complex relationship between man\, nature and\nthe supernatural. These paintings expressed responses to the tumult following Napoleon’s defeat with images embracing the wild\, garden design\, ‘Panoramania’\, millenarian hysteria and much more! \nTim’s involvement in art began with the practical. For a number of years he was a professional painter/ceramicist in Scotland and Wales\, before returning to university to study literature and the history of art\, then training to teach adults. For the last 30 years he has been a freelance cultural/art historian\, specialising in 17th and 19th century art and society. He now lectures for the University of Cambridge\, the WEA\, the Art Fund and The Arts Society (previously NADFAS)\, and presents residential study courses in Britain and Europe. Tim has now completed two lecture tours of Australia\, the last in 2016\, and presented a lecture for Hull City of Culture 2017 on T E Ferens\, patron of Hull’s newly refurbished gallery.

SUMMARY:'Amazing Grace': Literature & Faith
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a Study Day with Joyce Simpson at Parcevall Hall to explore themes of renewal\, spiritual friendship and mission in the life journeys of John Newton\, William Cowper\, and William Wilberforce. A central focus will be the Olney Hymns (1779)\, the fruit of collaboration between Newton and Cowper. These hymns\, including ‘God moves in a mysterious way’ and ‘Glorious things of Thee are spoken’\, were written for weekly meetings in the parish of Olney\, Buckinghamshire\, and are representative of themes foregrounded by the 18th century Evangelical Movement. One of the Olney Hymns has become reputedly the most famous hymn in the world: ‘Amazing Grace’. \nJoyce Simpson\, former Head of Humanities at Leeds Trinity University\, enjoyed many years introducing students to the delights of poetry\, novels and plays in the hope that they might discover in depth the joy of creative encounter with language and literature\, and be encouraged to set sail on their own spiritual quests. Now\, in retirement\, she takes pleasure in sharing her thoughts and insights with fellow voyagers from different walks of life. \nArrival at 10am.  Departure at 8pm.  Morning coffee\, lunch\, afternoon tea and evening meal are included in the price. \nPlease click here for the schedule of this event. \nThere are some spaces left for non-residential guests for this event.  Please contact the office to make your booking.
