Well-known for her accompanying and tutoring  skills\, she is experienced in conducting small groups\, chamber groups and orchestras throughout the UK. \nTerry regularly conducts Society of Recorder Players’ meetings at Leeds\, Bingley and York. He also conducts a group which meets weekly in Ilkley and has recently founded and conducts The Rombalds Recorders\, a group set up to perform early music. Lynn will be leading retreatants in contemplation of chosen Dominical sayings. \nLynn is a long-time member of the FCP. She attends the bimonthly FCP prayer group which meets at Parcevall Hall\, and she is a Lay Reader with responsibilities in four churches in the  Sheffield Diocese. After gaining a degree in Theology\, he went to Stephen’s House\, Oxford\, to prepare for ordination. His first incumbency was in Warrington and in 1985 he became the Diocesan Bishop of Wakefield\, and in 1991\, the Bishop of  London. From 1995 until 2005 he was Archbishop of York. Following retirement in 2005 he returned to parish life as vicar of St Margaret’s\, Ilkley. DESCRIPTION:Tutor: Hugh Parry\n\nMusic is obviously in debt to literature for the texts which it turns into song andopera. The debt is not one-way: poems\, short stories\, novels and song lyrics interpret music verbally\, or describe composers\, musicians\, musical events\, and audiences. The material is so copious that any choice amongst it would be random\, so the course will make a virtue of this with a wide variety of  musical genres and writers. Where possible\, we will listen to the music which stimulated the texts\, too. \nHugh Parry has offered adult education classes in literature for over 30 years. Although loyal all his life to Shakespeare\, he has over the years given courses on a diverse range of topics\,  including detective fiction\, utopias\, ghost stories\, Cowper\, Swift and R S Thomas. \nThe first Literature Appreciation event this year is from 11-13 April.

DESCRIPTION:Tutor: Tim Stimson\n\nThe Opponents can be likened to Swedish Impressionism\, with Carl Larsson and  Anders Zorn\, amongst other significant artists\, evolving new ways of depicting their world\, whilst concerned that their art should also contribute to a more enlightened society. \nTim’s involvement in art began with the practical. For a number of years\, he was a professional painter and ceramicist in Scotland and Wales\, before returning to university to study literature and the history of art.  For the last 30 years he has been a freelance cultural/art historian\, specialising in 17th and 19th-century art and society. He now lectures for the University of Cambridge\, the WEA\, the Art Fund and the Arts Society (formerly NADFAS)\, and presents residential study courses in Britain and Europe. Tim has now completed two lecture tours of Australia\, the last in 2016\, and presented a lecture for Hull City of Culture 2017 on T E Ferens\, patron of Hull’s newly refurbished gallery. \nThe first Art Appreciation event this year is from 25-27 April.

Much of the  weekend will be spent in quiet with extended periods of silent prayer. It is an invitation to find inner rest within a small community for a weekend\, and individually\, beyond. \nJill is a teacher of Centering Prayer\, and has attended retreats led by her two key influences\, Thomas Keating and Cynthia Bourgeault\, and Richard Rohr\, amongst others. She trained in the US and UK and is co-founder of the ‘Silence in the City’ series of talks on the contemplative life.

SUMMARY:Teaching spiritual practices: new possibilities
DESCRIPTION:Leader: Dr Rupert Sheldrake \nTeaching Spiritual Practices: new possibilities for cathedrals\, churches & church schools \nRecent scientific research has shown that\, in general\, people who have regular religious or spiritual practices are happier\, healthier\, and live longer.  I have written two books on the scientific study of spiritual practices\, Science and Practices and Ways to Go Beyond and Why They Work\, each of which explore seven different practices. Nowadays\, a range of spiritual practices are taught in secular settings\, like mindfulness meditation\, yoga\, and spiritual openings through psychedelics.  What I would like to explore with the participants in this Parcevall Hall weekend is how spiritual practices could be taught more widely through Christian institutions.  Can churches\, cathedrals and church schools help to promote practices which can give stronger personal experiences of spiritual connection?  In particular I would like to explore new possibilities for pilgrimage\, and for the teaching of prayer\, Christian meditation\, and chanting\, as well as the revisioning of festivals and holy days. This workshop will be based on both theory and practice\, with plenty of time for discussion and will also\, hopefully\, include a short pilgrimage. \nRupert Sheldrake\, PhD\, is a biologist and author of more than a hundred technical papers and nine books\, including The Science Delusion. As a fellow of Clare College\, Cambridge\, he was Director of Studies in Cell Biology\, and was also a research fellow of the Royal Society. He worked in Hyderabad\, India\, as Principal Plant Physiologist at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT)\, and also lived for two years in the Benedictine ashram of Fr Bede Griffiths in Tamil Nadu. From 2005-2010\, he was Director of the Perrott-Warrick Project for the study of unexplained human and animal abilities\, funded by Trinity College\, Cambridge. He is currently a fellow of the Institute of Noetic Sciences in Petaluma\, California and of Schumacher College in Dartington\, Devon. SUMMARY:Temple Theology
DESCRIPTION:Tutor: Margaret Barker\n \nTemple Theology is a fast-growing new way of biblical study\, rediscovering the roots of Christianity in the world of the Jerusalem temple. We shall explore how temple symbolism\, belief and practice shaped Christian faith and culture. Temple Theology is changing how we understand Christian origins and our relationship to Judaism. \nMargaret Barker has developed an approach to Biblical Studies now known as Temple Theology. Margaret Barker read theology at Cambridge and went on to pursue her research  independently. She was elected President of the Society for Old Testament Study in 1998\, and edited the Society’s second Monograph Series\, published by Ashgate. She has so far written 17 books\, which form a sequence\, later volumes building on her earlier conclusions. Since 1997\, she has been part of the symposium Religion\, Science and the Environment\, convened by His All\nHoliness Bartholomew I\, the Ecumenical Patriarch. \nThis work has led her to develop the practical implications of Temple Theology as the basis for a Christian environment theology. In July 2008 Margaret Barker was awarded a Lambeth Degree  of Doctor of Divinity by Rowan Williams\, the then Archbishop of Canterbury\, ‘in recognition of her work on the Jerusalem Temple and the origins of Christian Liturgy\, which has made a significantly new contribution to our understanding of the New Testament and opened up important fields for research’. \nMargaret Barker is a mother and grandmother\, a retired Methodist preacher and was involved for over 30 years with the work of a women’s refuge.

SUMMARY:Beginners' Birdwatching & The Dawn Chorus
DESCRIPTION:Leader: Chris Bradshaw\n\nJoin us on a relaxed birdwatching break aimed at people new to birdwatching\, or those just wishing to enjoy commoner birds in a tranquil location. We will have a programme of short  birdwatching walks which focus on learning how to identify and understand more about the life histories of the commoner resident and migrant birds that occur in the area. There will also be the opportunity to experience one of nature’s most delightful spring events; the dawn chorus. \nChris Bradshaw has been working as a freelance ornithologist and birdwatching tour guide for over 25 years. Currently spending much of his time undertaking ornithological survey work across northern England\, he formerly led many overseas birdwatching tours\, and still runs customised birdwatching trips in the UK. He finds great joy in watching and passing on his knowledge of the  commoner British birds which first inspired his interest as a child.

SUMMARY:Art Appreciation 1 - The Glasgow Boys
DESCRIPTION:Tutor: Tim Stimson\n\nAn introduction to the art and lives of the Scottish artists – Henry\, Guthrie\, Crawhall\, Hornel and others – who emerged from the rustic realism of the outdoor painting era to develop their individual and striking pictures. \nTim’s involvement in art began with the practical. For a number of years\, he was a professional painter and ceramicist in Scotland and Wales\, before returning to university to study literature and the history of art. For the last 30 years he has been a freelance cultural/art historian\, specialising in 17thand 19th-century art and society. He now lectures for the University of Cambridge\, the  WEA\, the Art Fund and the Arts Society (formerly NADFAS)\, and presents residential study courses in Britain and Europe. Tim has now completed two lecture tours of Australia\, the last in 2016\, and presented a lecture for Hull City of Culture 2017 on T E Ferens\, patron of Hull’s newly refurbished gallery. \nThe second Art Appreciation event this year is from 15-17 August.

SUMMARY:Literature Appreciation I - Chaucer
DESCRIPTION:Tutor: Hugh Parry\n\nIn this course we will range over a sample of the Canterbury Tales\, the well-known and the less-known. Like the pilgrims who told them\, they are a collection of ‘all-sorts’\, from satire to romance\, raunchy anecdotes to saints’ lives\, chivalry to folklore. Chaucer had no time to finish the project\, but he envisaged it as a compendium of the narratives that circulated in the written and oral  culture of the age. The theme of dreams\, prominent in the earlier poems\, will feature again. The texts will be a combination of modern versions and the originals – no-one will be left bewildered\, but Middle English is a delight worth experiencing. \nHugh Parry has offered adult education classes in literature for over 30 years. Although loyal all his life to Shakespeare\, he has over the years given courses on a diverse range of topics\,  including detective fiction\, utopias\, ghost stories\, Cowper\, Swift and R S Thomas. \nThe second Literature Appreciation event this year is from 12-15 September.

DESCRIPTION:Leader: Canon Graham Bettridge\n\nJoin us at Parcevall Hall for this most special week of the year. The programme will be led by our chaplain\, Canon Graham Bettridge\, taking time to reflect on the significance of Holy Week\, and celebrating together the triumph of Easter Day. \nGraham trained for the ministry at the Society of the Sacred Mission in Durham. He was ordained in the Bradford Diocese by Bishop Michael Parker\, and his ordination retreat was spent at  Parcevall\, which was then the newly-acquired retreat house of Bradford Diocese. After ordination\, Graham was Team Rector of the seven Rainbow Parishes\, based in Kirby Lonsdale. He was also Honorary Canon and Senior Chaplain of Cumbria Police Service from 1992 until 2012. In 2007 he was appointed Honorary Chaplain of Parcevall Hall by Bishop Nick Baines.

DESCRIPTION:Leader: Revd Canon Andrew Tawn\n\n‘My God\, my God\, why have you forsaken me?’\n\nAs this quiet day falls in Holy Week\, we will be reflecting on Jesus’ agonised cry from the cross. These words lead us into some of the great mysteries of faith: our own experiences of God’s  absence; why did Jesus have to suffer and die on the cross? What sense can we make of our own suffering? How can we truly celebrate the resurrection\, unless we travel by the way of the  cross? \nThis day is an invitation to watch and pray with Christ in his suffering; to resist the temptation to bypass the darker themes of Holy Week\, so that we may be the better prepared for the light and joy of Easter. \nAndrew Tawn is Director of Clergy Development for the Diocese of Leeds. Before that he was rector of Addingham. Once upon a time he was a secondary school teacher\, and his interest and  enthusiasm for how we learn has always been an important strand in his ministry\, being involved in training ordinands\, readers and curates before his present full time training role. DESCRIPTION:Tutor: Keely Hodgson\n\nCombine singing in harmony with rest\, nurture and inspiration. No previous singing experience\, or the ability to read music\, is required. A varied repertoire of songs and rounds are sensitively  taught using call and response. \nKeely Hodgson is a composer and natural voice practitioner. She has worked as a music specialist in primary and special school settings and leads a number of community singing groups\, including Ben Rhydding Community Choir. She organises monthly events of music and the spoken word. Keely is committed to sharing the sense of well-being and  soulful connection that singing with others can bring and helping those who have not sung before to discover their unique voice. \nThere are two further Heart & Soul Singing Retreats this year: 19-21 July & 3-5 November.

DESCRIPTION:Tutor: Terry Smurthwaite\n\nEnsemble playing in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere\, this workshop is aimedat experienced adult players who ideally offer two instruments and are able to swap between them. The ability to hold your own part in a group and good sight-reading skills are key. Expect a wide variety of interesting music and technique tuition\, as required. \nTerry regularly conducts Society of Recorder  Players’ meetings at Leeds\, Bingley and York. He also conducts a group which meets weekly in Ilkley and has recently founded and conducts The Rombalds Recorders\, a group set up to  perform early music. In addition to bringing a wide range of music\, he is able to offer advice on the techniques of ensemble playing and musicianship.

SUMMARY:Teaching spiritual practices: new possibilities for cathedrals\, churches and church schools
DESCRIPTION:Leader: Dr Rupert Sheldrake \nRecent scientific research has shown that\, in general\, people who have regular religious or spiritual practices are happier\, healthier\, and live longer. Rupert has written two books on the scientific study of spiritual practices\, Science and Practices and Ways to Go Beyond and Why They Work\, each of which explore seven different practices. Nowadays\, a range of spiritual practices are taught in secular settings\, like mindfulness meditation\, yoga\, and spiritual openings through psychedelics. The participants in this Parcevall Hall weekend will explore how spiritual practices could be taught more widely through Christian institutions. Can churches\, cathedrals and church schools help to promote practices which can give stronger personal experiences of spiritual  connection? \nIn particular Rupert will be looking at new possibilities for pilgrimage\, and for the teaching of prayer\, Christian meditation\, fasting\, and chanting\, as well as the revisioning of festivals and holy  days. \nRupert Sheldrake\, PhD\, is a biologist and author of more than ninety technical papers and nine books\, including The Science Delusion. As a fellow of Clare College\, Cambridge\, he was Director  of Studies in Cell Biology\, and was also a research fellow of the Royal Society. He worked in Hyderabad\, India\, as Principal Plant Physiologist at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT)\, and also lived for two years in the Benedictine ashram of Fr Bede Griffiths in Tamil Nadu. From 2005-2010\, he was Director of the Perrott-Warrick Project for the study of unexplained human and animal abilities\, funded by Trinity College\, Cambridge. He is currently a fellow of the Institute of Noetic Sciences in Petaluma\, California and of Schumacher College in Dartington\, Devon. \nHe lives in London and is married to Jill Purce\, with whom he has two sons.
