DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED \nCHAUCER \nTutor:  Hugh Parry \nChaucer now seems to be treated as the purveyor of rollicking pseudo-Medieval romps\, flattened of course into modern English;  not a fate which genius deserves.  This course will sidestep the favourites beloved of travelling players and setters of school syllabuses\, and give a glimpse of his quality through some of his less familiar Canterbury Tales\, as well as taking you on a journey to some strange places of the imagination where you will meet duchesses\, goddesses\, birds\, good women – and not so good women. \nHugh Parry has offered adult education classes in literature for over 30 years.  Although loyal all his life to Shakespeare\, he has over the years given courses on a diverse range of topics\, including detective fiction\, utopias\, ghost stories\, Cowper\, Swift and R S Thomas. \nThe second Literature Appreciation retreat in our 2020 programme is from 13 – 15 November.

DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED \nCartoonery:  English Attitudes \nTutor:  Tim Stimson \nMany artists have discovered that humour is the key to winning the hearts of the English!  Caricature\, satire and the cartoon have given pleasure\, satisfaction\, amusement and relief\, whilst drawing down censure and puncturing pomposity across class divides since the 18th century. \nFrom the witty and genteel to the vicious and scurrilous\, these pithy encapsulations of the recognisable continue to have relevance today.  They are miniature masterpieces\, ephemeral yet enduring through time. \nFrom the Georgians; Gillray & Rowlandson\, to Punch and Strand cartoonists\, Tenniel\, Sambourne\, Leach and Dickie Doyle and from Thelwell to Scarfe\, these virtual drolleries have lost none of their appeal. \nTim’s involvement in art began with the practical.  For a number of years he was a professional painter and ceramicist in Scotland and Wales\, before returning to university to study literature and the history of art. \nFor the last 30 years he has been a freelance cultural/art historian\, specialising in 17th and 18th century art and society.  He now lectures for the University of Cambridge\, the WEA\, the Arts Fund and the The Arts Society (formerly NADFAS)\, and presents residential study courses in Britain and Europe.  Tim as now completed two lecture tours of Australia\, the last in 2016\, and presented a lecture for the Hull City of Culture 2017 on T E Ferens\, patron of Hull’s newly refurbished gallery. \nThe second Art Appreciation event in our 2020 programme is from 25-27 August.

SUMMARY:Open Quiet Day II
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED \nLeader: Revd Canon Ailsa Newby \n“We are an Easter people and alleluia is our song!” Long after most have finished their chocolate eggs\, Christians continue to celebrate their Easter faith.  A chance to explore what it is to live our lives as Easter people in joy and praise. \nCanon Ailsa Newby is Canon Pastor at Ripon Cathedral with responsibility for mission and pastoral care.  Ordained in Southwark in 1998\, she served in that Diocese in various roles until moving to Ripon Cathedral in the summer of 2017.  Part of her ministry has always involved spiritual direction and retreat leading and she is now also serving the Diocese of Leeds as Spirituality and Spiritual Direction Co-ordinator for the Ripon Episcopal Area. \nAll are welcome.  No booking is required\, but please bring your own lunch. \nFreewill offering
