SUMMARY:Spring Walking in Wharfedale
DESCRIPTION:Wharfedale has a variety of landscapes;  wild moorland\, limestone uplands\, wooded valleys and gentle farmland\, with the uninterrupted beauty of Upper Wharfedale visible from the hilltops. \nWe offer a choice each day of either short or longer walks with our guides\, returning to the welcome and warmth of the Hall.  Packed lunches are provided\, but if at any time you would rather take a stroll around the gardens\, lunch can be served for you in the dining room. \nOur chaplain\, Canon Graham Bettridge\, will be here for a part of your stay to provide spiritual leadership for those who would like to participate. \n Our second walking break this year is from 24 – 27 October

DESCRIPTION:Chaucer \nTutor:  Hugh Parry \nChaucer now seems to be treated as the purveyor of rollicking pseudo-Medieval romps\, flattened of course in to modern English:  not a fate which genius deserves.  This course will sidestep the favourites beloved of travelling players and setters of school syllabuses\, and give a glimpse of his quality through some of his less familiar Canterbury Tales\, as well as taking you on a journey to some strange places of the imagination where you will meet duchesses\, goddesses\, bird\, good women – and not so good women. \nHugh Parry has offered adult education classes in literature for over 30 years. Although loyal all his life to Shakespeare\, he has over the years given courses on a diverse range of topics\, including detective fiction\, utopias\, ghost stories\, Cowper\, Swift and R S Thomas. \nThe second Literature Appreciation event this year is from 27 – 30 September

DESCRIPTION:Cartoonery:  English Attitudes \nTutor:  Tim Stimson \nMany artists discovered that humour is the key to winning the hearts of the English! Caricature\, satire and the cartoon have given pleasure\, satisfaction\, amusement and relief\, whilst drawing down censure and puncturing pomposity across class divides since the 18th century. \nFrom the witty and genteel to the vicious and scurrilous\, these pithy encapsulations of the recognisable\, continue to have relevance today. They are miniature masterpieces\, ephemeral yet enduring through time.  From the Georgians; Gillray & Rowlandson\, to Punch and Strand cartoonists\, Tenniel\, Sambourne\, Leach and Dickie Doyle and from Thelwell to Scarfe\, these virtual drolleries have lost none of their appeal. \nTim’s involvement in art began with the practical.  For a number of years\, he was a professional painter and ceramicist in Scotland and Wales\, before returning to university to study literature and the history of art. \nFor the last 30 years he has been a freelance cultural/art historian\, specialising in 17th- and 19th-century art and society.  He now lectures for the University of Cambridge\, the WEA\, the Art Fund and the Arts Society (formerly NADFAS)\, and presents residential study courses in Britain and Europe. Tim has now completed two lecture tours of Australia\, the last in 2016\, and presented a lecture of Hull City of Culture 2017 on T E Ferens\, patron of Hull’s newly refurbished gallery. \nThe second Art Appreciation event this year is from 9 – 11 August \n

During this two-night retreat you will learn about our human stress response and how to begin to develop habits to help build your physical\, mental and emotional resilience to such stress. It will also support you to discover how best to respond to challenging circumstances\, enabling you to regain a sense of self\, and to stay grounded and present. \nCathy will guide you through a carefully balanced blend of facilitated discussion\, practical activities and personal reflection\, informed by research evidence\, insight and experience. \nTime will be built into the schedule to relax and explore Parcevall Hall and its beautiful gardens. \nCathy’s aim is to leave you nourished\, strengthened\, and with an understanding of how you can build resilient practices into your daily life. \nDr Cathy Brown is a Chartered Occupational Psychologist and has supported individuals\, teams and organisations to manage transitions and change for over 20 years. She is passionate about her work and feels this is her true calling. She runs her own business and has published a series of practical transition guides\, Testing the Water.
