‘The Word Heart Deep’: Religious Poetry of the English Reformation

Talks and shared readings, mainly on the lives and works of three poets: John Donne, George Herbert and Henry Vaughan. What were the pressures shaping the experience of these writers? How do they speak to seekers in the 21st century?

George Herbert: In Battle with All that Dogs Mankind
Herbert and Vaughan: Shared Readings
We will explore the religious quest through the works and lives of poets who lived in turbulent times, and consider what the pilgrim journey of each can offer to readers in the 21st century.
Arrival at 10.00am for Holy Communion at 10.15am. Price includes coffee, lunch, afternoon tea and evening meal.
Joyce Simpson is the former Head of Humanities at Leeds Trinity University, where she introduced students to the delights of poetry, novels and plays. Now, in retirement, she takes pleasure in sharing her thoughts and insights with fellow voyagers from different walks of life.
